Clinical Expertise

Caleb Spiro is a skills trainer at the Youth and Family Institute where he provides supervised direct patient care in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) services to help improve the lives of children and youth with emotional dysregulation and developing psychopathology. He enjoys teaching, modeling and reinforcing skills for emotional resilience to stress and hard life events.

Training

Caleb has trained as a crisis line worker, trauma interventionist, and behavioral assistant, and has worked on teams delivering CBT, DBT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to youth and families. He has also developed a nationally recognized anti-bullying program that has been implemented at schools across the country.


Research

Caleb aspires to better characterize how trauma and early life adversity contribute to changes in underlying neurobiology and worsening psychopathology. Specifically, his research investigates how adaptive responses to adversity contribute towards successful diagnostic remission across mood and psychosis spectrum disorders. Prior to the Youth and Family Institute, Caleb worked as a research assistant at Stanford University as well as the University of California, San Francisco.


General Approach

Caleb focuses his approach on developing resilience and adaptive coping strategies. Caleb cares deeply about highlighting individuals’ strengths, and values helping others feel empowered to overcome hardships. In his free time, he enjoys playing with his dogs and running outdoors.
