Clinical Expertise

Dr. Charlop is an expert in behavioral and cognitive behavioral (CBT) interventions for children and families.  She is a world renown expert in clinical interventions for autistic children and teens with autism. She is the retired Director of the Claremont Autism Center at Claremont McKenna College (www.cmc.edu/autism-center).  Dr. Charlop has been a licensed psychologist since 1987 and has enjoyed a private practice specializing in helping children with behavioral problems, sleep difficulties, phobias, anxiety, ADHD, feeding issues, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder, and school refusal. She also specializes in working with parents, families and couples. Dr. Charlop is an experienced clinician for those adults suffering with panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression.

Training

Dr. Charlop obtained her Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University and her clinical training at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  Her Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins was in Behavioral Pediatrics. She carried a small patient load in the Behavioral Medicine Clinic at Johns Hopkins as well, focusing on anxiety and eating disorders.  She moonlighted as a Psychological Assistant at a private practice gaining experience in treating anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, panic attacks, OCD and GAD.


Research

Dr. Charlop has been a prolific researcher, particularly in the area of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  She has published more than 135 articles in peer-reviewed journals and made over 350 scholarly conference presentations. Dr. Charlop has published three books through main publishing houses (Author Link). Her books have been translated into Spanish and Chinese. Dr. Charlop has received numerous research grants ranging from NIMH/MIH through private foundations. She is a sought-after speaker and has delivered invited key-note addresses at conferences and academic medical centers ranging from Manhattan to Sidney, and Paris to Hong Kong. 


Teaching

Dr. Charlop is an Emeritus Professor of Psychological Science at Claremont McKenna College where she enjoyed a long academic position of teaching and research.  Dr. Charlop taught numerous classes at Claremont McKenna and Claremont Graduate University. She received the Faculty Scholarship Award at Claremont McKenna College. She has also taught numerous Continuing Education courses and specialized training workshops for psychologists and psychiatrists through various agencies and organizations.

Consulting:

Dr. Charlop is available for consulting for diagnostics and treatment programs for autism spectrum disorder as well as school programs.  She can consult with ABA programs, speech and language training, and social skills programs design.

Expert Witness:

Dr. Charlop has served as an expert witness in court and other litigation situations, including children’s trauma, autism, psychological autopsy, and classroom placement.
