Clinical Expertise

Timothy Hicks is the Practice Manager at the Youth and Family Institute, where he provides supervised direct patient care in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). He specializes in delivering evidence-based therapies to children, adolescents, and young adults with complex diagnostic presentations, including co-occurring anxiety, mood, personality, and substance use disorders. Timothy is particularly skilled in teaching and reinforcing DBT skills to help build emotional resilience and navigate life’s challenges.

Master of Social Work (MSW), California State University, San Bernardino
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Pitzer College, Claremont
California Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CADC) certification, Glendale Community College


Training

Timothy has extensive training in crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and behavioral assistance. He has been trained in and has experience delivering CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT). His clinical internships at Riverside University Health System-Behavioral Health and Telecare Crisis Stabilization Unit have equipped him with practical skills in individual therapy, assessments, and crisis counseling. Additionally, his experience at Las Encinas Hospital involved administrative duties that supported crisis intervention and patient intake processes. Timothy is also a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CADC-II).


Research

Timothy's research interests lie in understanding how trauma and early life adversity impact neurobiology and psychopathology. He has contributed to studies on HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and substance use treatment within the US prison system.

Timothy adopts a strengths-based, culturally responsive approach to therapy, emphasizing collaboration and self-reflection. He is committed to helping clients develop adaptive coping strategies and build resilience. In his free time, Timothy enjoys spending time with friends and family.
