Dr. Marcus Rodriguez and Dr. Faria Kamal will be offering a two-day antiracism training designed for mental health professionals and specifically the DBT community. This is an opportunity for clinicians, supervisors, and directors to significantly elevate their practice of cultural competency and antiracism in clinical work.
Learning Objectives:
-
Develop an antiracism team and patient agreements
-
Identify types and subsets of microaggressions that occur in therapy — and learn interventions for each subtype
-
Classify common roles and problematic reactions of White clinicians, and learn how to respond effectively when these reactions emerge
-
Outline best practices following incidents of racism, including an anti-racist repair protocol
One of their favorite teaching moments comes from this line: “The devil is racist.” Dr. Kamal shares this in the context of discussing the “Devil’s Advocate” — a problematic, power-based role that often arises in groups when addressing racism.
She explains: “In a racist society, it is the other side of the dialectic to be antiracist.”
Through the Youth & Family Institute (YFI), we offer justice-oriented, practical trainings for providers seeking to deliver antiracist mental health care.
At Youth & Family Institute, we believe that antiracist and culturally responsive care is essential for healing. Our DBT and CBT programs support children, teens, and families across Monrovia, Altadena, La Cañada, and West Los Angeles.
